Happy July!
Here in the San Francisco area, it was supposed to be 85 degrees on the 4th. There was wild cheering. But it didn't happen. The fog rolled in, thick and cold. You know what? The show went on. You could see red fireworks burst through the curtain of fog. Everyone is inclined to believe Mark Twain's description of San Francisco on this 4th of July.
I hope you guys had the works -- heat, hot dogs and hoots at the celebrations.
WHIPLASH came in at #5 on the New York Times, #5 for hardcover fiction on USA Today and #5 on Publishers Weekly. #5 is a good number. As for KNOCKOUT, paperback, I will find out tomorrow. All digits crossed, please. If you haven't bought a copy yet of either thriller, do your duty. The universe will bless you.
Our yearly family get-together at the Outer Banks (necklace of barrier islands off North Carolina coast) went swimmingly. We had 40 family members and I hope all had a great time. There was always a bridge game going on in the living room. The pool was heated, the ocean unheated, both swimmable. If you could spit a goodly distance you'd hit the sand dunes. Tulio's, in Duck (wonderful tourist town), is the best bakery on the OBX. They enjoyed our birthday custom a dozen times -- just imagine, 12 different obscene decadent cakes, pies, éclairs and think of your thighs pulsing and think of the desserts slowly building up so there's more and more choice and great big paper plates and don't forget the ice cream. Oh mama --
I hope all of you enjoy some big smiles this summer, like a roll on the beach with your kids, Frisbee with your siblings, long walks with your mom.
Happy summer, Catherine Coulter
